It’s finally football season, and my wife and I (and I think the kids) get excited about game day. It’s one of those days where we can finally slow down, do a quick cleaning of the house in the morning, make it to church if we are lucky, and get back in time to make some great food and watch the game. I’m responsible for game day food, and well all of the food planning every day of the week, and I’m very comfortable with that. Game day food, to me, is built around comfort food. Whether that is a simple bowl of chili, or a hot dip, or heck, even nachos, it is truly right up my alley.
This past week, I really had my mind on buffalo chicken wings, or heck anything buffaloed. I simply love that spicy, and tangy sauce, coated on a chicken wing, however I did not want to fry or bake up chicken wings, knowing that my wife would not participate in that excitement. So as I thought of things like my loaded buffalo chicken potato skins, as well as the buffalo chicken dip, I knew I was in trouble and had to come up with a quick fix to cure my craving. This is where my idea of buffalo chicken hot dogs came into place.
Let’s get started on these great game day hot dogs.
Ingredients:
- 1 whole chicken hot dog
- 1 hot dog bun, sliced
- 2 tbsp Frank’s Red Hot
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp blue cheese, crumbled
- 1 tbsp celery, thinly sliced
- celery leaves, torn (optional)
- water
Start by adding enough water to a skillet, and add that to a stove set on medium-high heat. Add your chicken sausage. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and cook for about 10 minutes.
During this time, add the Frank’s Red Hot and butter to small sauce pan and melt on a temperature.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and add in the hot dog bun. I was going for a light toast, just to add that texture that you might get from the crunch of a crispy chicken wing. After a few minutes, check your bun, and once it is lightly toasted, remove it from the oven.
To make the buffalo chicken hot dog, add the chicken sausage to your bun.
Pour the hot sauce all over the hot dog, and top with the blue cheese, and celery.
Dig in.
This buffalo chicken hot dog was awesome. I did not have hot sauce all over my fingers as you would expect when eating chicken wings, and the sauce along with the sweetness of the chicken sausage and bite from the blue cheese just sold me. I will definitely be making these again. I hope you enjoy!
